Fetscherplatz and the adjacent Borsbergstraße are the commercial centres of the Dresden district of Striesen. For a long time, agriculture determined the economic development of the district. The original Slavic settlement was first mentioned in documents in the 14th century; by the end of the 19th century, the village had grown so close to Dresden that it was unceremoniously incorporated.

The current architecture of the district, which is located to the east of the old town, dates largely from the Wilhelminian period. The two- to three-storey town villas mostly had a square ground plan and are therefore still called "coffee mill houses" today.
