The Zwinger in Dresden is the most important building of the late Baroque period. It was built between 1710 and 1728 as an orangery and courtly festival venue; its richly detailed splendour provides an insight into the tastes and splendour of the electors at the time of Augustus the Strong. Today, the Zwinger houses the porcelain collection, the Mathematical-Physical Salon and - in an adjoining wing - the Old Masters Picture Gallery. The spacious grounds with lawns, fountains and galleries are completely accessible and invite visitors to stroll around during the warmer months. The Zwinger's crown gate is considered the city's landmark.
