The Yenidze is Dresden's former cigarette factory. It was named after a tobacco town in the then Ottoman Empire, whose present name is Genissea. In 1909, Martin Hammitzsch designed the building in the oriental style of a large mosque, with a glass dome and the chimney as a minaret. The coloured glass dome was re-glazed in 1966 in more restrained shades. In 1925, the Reemtsma Group took over the cigarette production and, after the partial destruction of the building in the Second World War, continued to run it until 1953. After that, the Yenidze served as a warehouse and administration building for the Dresden Tobacco Office.
On 21 November 1996 the Yenidze was reopened as an office building with a restaurant and disco after being restored true to the original. Today, the dome houses the Yenidze Theatre and a restaurant. The restaurant includes Dresden's highest beer garden with a fantastic view over the city centre. The Yenidze Theatre presents performances created especially for the location. The ambitious team of artists combines themes from India and the Orient in performances with music, dance, language, song and sounds.
