The Procession of Princes is located on the outside of the stable yard at Schlossplatz. The 101-metre-long mural depicts the history of the Saxon ruling dynasty of the House of Wettin as a larger-than-life equestrian procession. After long preparatory work, this work of art by Wilhelm Walther was mounted as a sgraffito on the outer wall of the Long Walk between 1872 and 1876 to mark the 800th anniversary of the Wettin dynasty. As protection against the external weather conditions, the quickly fading artwork was transferred to Meissen porcelain tiles. Over 24,000 tiles were used to depict the 35 margraves, electors and kings as well as other scientists, artists, craftsmen and peasants.
Today, the Procession of Princes is one of the most important sights in Dresden's Old Town and is admired by thousands of visitors every year.
